My First Stand-Up Performance
Portland’s Funniest 2021
Last Wednesday, July 21, 2021, I performed my very first stand-up comedy performance. This was something I’ve always wanted to try, but just never did. A few months back, my friend Rick tagged me in a Facebook post to sign up for Portland’s Funniest. So I did what I always do, and I signed up and figured out what I was going to do later!
I went on Amazon and bought 3 books on performing stand-up comedy. Once I had some material together and learned the foundations of stand-up, I joined a virtual comedy group where I was able to get free coaching and gauge my material based on how people reacted. The coach said it was well put together and that gave me that added bit of confidence going into my first performance.
I didn’t know how the show was going to go, but once I got on the mic and let the nervous energy flow, I knew this was something I was born to do!
I didn’t get voted into the top 3 performances by the audience that night. While I was disappointed, this could have been the best thing to happen to me. It has put an even bigger chip on my shoulder to become great!
I plan on performing multiple times every week and continuing to write and polish my content. I have a lofty goal of getting my own Netflix special and getting paid for my humor.
What do you guys think?
